Explore switching to HVO →A renewable diesel alternative
HVO provides businesses with a practical way to reduce their reliance on fossil diesel without compromising everyday performance. It combines substantial lifecycle greenhouse-gas savings with excellent storage stability, dependable cold-weather performance and straightforward use in compatible diesel equipment.
Certified HVO can deliver lifecycle greenhouse-gas savings of up to 90% compared with conventional fossil diesel, depending on its feedstock and supply pathway.
HVO meets the EN 15940 standard for paraffinic diesel and can be used in many approved diesel engines and machines without requiring major modifications.
Our HVO is produced from traceable, certified waste-derived feedstocks, providing a renewable alternative to mineral diesel.
A high cetane number and strong low-temperature performance support reliable starting, efficient combustion and reduced risk of waxing in cold conditions.
HVO contains no FAME and is less susceptible to moisture-related degradation, helping it remain stable during extended storage under suitable conditions.
HVO is free from sulphur and aromatics and can reduce particulate matter, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions compared with conventional diesel.
Although HVO is approved for many diesel engines and machines, always check the manufacturer’s guidance for your specific equipment.
Renewable diesel explained
HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil. Also known as renewable diesel, it is a high-quality paraffinic fuel designed to provide a more sustainable alternative to conventional fossil diesel.
HVO is produced by treating waste oils and fats with hydrogen. This process removes oxygen and impurities, creating a stable, clean-burning fuel with properties similar to conventional diesel but without the FAME content found in traditional biodiesel.
The HVO supplied by Compass Fuels is sourced from certified, traceable waste-derived feedstocks. It meets the EN 15940 standard for paraffinic diesel and can be used as a direct replacement for mineral diesel in a wide range of manufacturer-approved engines and equipment.

Understanding the differences
HVO, FAME biodiesel and conventional diesel can all be used to power diesel equipment, but they differ considerably in composition, storage performance, emissions and compatibility. Here is how the three fuel types compare.
| Characteristic | Conventional Diesel | FAME Biodiesel | HVO Fuel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel type | Mineral fuel produced primarily from crude oil. | Biofuel produced by processing vegetable oils or animal fats. | Renewable paraffinic diesel produced using a hydrotreatment process. |
| Applicable standard | EN 590 | EN 14214 | EN 15940 |
| FAME content | UK road diesel commonly contains up to 7% FAME. | FAME-based and available in different blend levels. | Contains no FAME. |
| Storage stability | Suitable for conventional storage, subject to normal fuel management. | More susceptible to moisture absorption, oxidation and microbial contamination. | Excellent oxidation stability and well suited to long-term storage. |
| Cold-weather performance | Grade and performance vary seasonally. | Can be more sensitive to low temperatures. | Strong low-temperature performance and a high cetane rating. |
| Equipment compatibility | Designed for conventional diesel engines. | Compatibility depends on the blend, engine and manufacturer. | Approved as a drop-in fuel by many manufacturers, subject to the specific engine or model. |
| Lifecycle GHG emissions | Provides the fossil-diesel comparison baseline. | Can reduce lifecycle emissions, depending on feedstock and blend. | Can reduce net lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions by up to 90%. |
| Typical cetane performance | Standard diesel cetane performance. | Generally comparable with conventional diesel. | Typically higher, supporting efficient combustion and reliable starting. |
Fuel properties and emissions savings vary according to product specification, feedstock, blend and operating conditions. Always confirm equipment compatibility with the manufacturer.
Tell our team what equipment you operate, how much fuel you use and where it needs to be delivered. We can discuss whether HVO is suitable and provide a competitive delivered quotation.
Manufacturer approval matters
HVO is approved for use in a growing range of diesel-powered vehicles, machines and equipment. However, approval can vary between manufacturers, engines and individual models, so compatibility should always be checked before switching.
HVO is approved for many commercial vehicles, including trucks, buses and fleet vehicles. Check the vehicle handbook or obtain confirmation from the manufacturer for the particular engine and model.
Many construction, agricultural, forestry and industrial machines can operate on HVO. Compatibility remains dependent on the equipment manufacturer and engine specification.
Some diesel cars, vans and light commercial vehicles are approved for paraffinic diesel such as HVO. Look for an HVO or XTL reference in the handbook or seek manufacturer confirmation.
Never assume that approval for one vehicle or engine applies to every model made by the same manufacturer.
Check the vehicle or equipment handbook.
Look for EN 15940, HVO or XTL approval.
Confirm directly with the manufacturer if uncertain.

HVO fuel questions answered
Find answers about HVO compatibility, delivery, pricing, storage and switching from conventional diesel.
HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil. It is a renewable paraffinic diesel produced by treating waste oils and fats with hydrogen.
HVO differs from conventional FAME biodiesel because it contains no FAME or oxygen. This gives HVO stronger storage stability, cold-weather performance and compatibility with many approved diesel engines.
HVO is approved for many modern diesel vehicles, machines and generators, but it should not automatically be assumed to work in every diesel engine.
Check the handbook for an HVO, XTL or EN 15940 reference, or obtain confirmation from the equipment manufacturer before switching.
HVO can generally be mixed with conventional diesel in compatible equipment. This allows businesses to transition gradually or top up existing diesel stocks with HVO.
Mixing the fuels will reduce the overall renewable content and corresponding greenhouse-gas savings. Manufacturer compatibility should still be confirmed.
Tank cleaning is not automatically required in every case. However, the tank should be inspected for water, sediment, microbial growth and degraded fuel before making the switch.
Where contamination is present, Compass Fuels can discuss fuel uplift, testing and tank-cleaning options before arranging the HVO delivery.
Certified HVO can reduce net lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions by up to 90% compared with conventional fossil diesel.
The precise saving depends on the feedstock, production process, supply pathway and how the fuel is used.
The minimum bulk HVO order is 500 litres. Compass Fuels can supply quantities from 500 litres up to approximately 36,000 litres in a full articulated tanker load.
Smaller tankers may also be available for sites with restricted access.
Standard HVO delivery is normally available within 1–3 working days across mainland Britain, subject to location, stock and transport availability.
Same-day and next-day deliveries may be possible. Call 0330 128 9838 if the fuel is required urgently.
HVO prices change with wholesale renewable-fuel markets, feedstock availability, order quantity, delivery postcode and the timescale required.
