Changes to the Red Diesel Duty
Red diesel is a reduced/low duty fuel and is also subject to a lower 5% VAT rate unless over 2300 litres is delivered in any single delivery, then it must revert back to 20% VAT.
The fuel is marked with a chemical marker red dye allowing Customs and Excise to identify when and where red diesel has been used, and also to trace the origins of supply.
The rules surrounding using red diesel have now changed, with many sectors losing their entitlement from 1 April 2022. Please note – it’s illegal to use red diesel in road-going vehicles.

What is Red Diesel?
Red diesel also known as tractor diesel is a low duty form of white diesel which can be used in untaxed off-road vehicles and machines i.e. in agriculture, rail transport and noncommercial electricity generation and heating.
Red diesel is subject to minimal taxation, making it unsuitable for use as regular automotive diesel fuel in standard cars.
