Current Red Diesel Price per Litre
Red diesel, also known as gas oil, does not have one fixed UK price. Wholesale fuel costs can change daily, while the delivered price also varies according to the quantity ordered and the distance and type of delivery required. For the most accurate rate, call Compass Fuels on 01772 619 461 or contact our sales team.
Why Have Red Diesel Prices Been So Volatile in 2026?
Fuel markets have experienced considerable volatility throughout 2026. Changes in global crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty, refinery capacity, supply disruption and currency movements can all affect the wholesale cost of red diesel.
The delivered price can therefore change even when your required quantity and delivery address remain the same. An online or previously quoted price should always be treated as a snapshot rather than a guaranteed future rate.
In June 2026, the government also introduced a temporary additional reduction in the duty charged on marked gas oil. The current duty rate is one component of the overall price; wholesale fuel costs, distribution and delivery still have a significant effect. The temporary duty arrangements are currently scheduled to run until 31 December 2026. (Government fuel-duty announcement)
What Affects Red Diesel Prices?
Global oil markets
Red diesel is affected by movements in international oil and refined fuel markets. Supply, demand, production levels and disruption to global trade can cause wholesale prices to rise or fall.
Delivery location
Your postcode and distance from the relevant fuel depot affect the delivered cost. Rural locations, restricted access and deliveries requiring a smaller tanker may be priced differently.
Quantity ordered
The number of litres ordered can influence the price per litre. Larger bulk deliveries are often more cost-effective because the delivery cost is spread across a greater volume of fuel.
Delivery timeframe
Scheduled deliveries normally provide greater flexibility than urgent or out-of-hours requests. Emergency deliveries may cost more because of the additional logistical requirements.
Seasonal demand
Agricultural demand can increase during busy periods such as harvesting. Seasonal changes can also affect supply requirements and the availability of the appropriate summer or winter fuel grade.
Fuel duty
Red diesel carries a rebated rate of fuel duty, but government changes to that rate can affect the overall cost. From 15 June 2026, the duty on marked gas oil is 6.48p per litre. (Current government duty rates)
Why Red Diesel Prices Vary by Region
Red diesel is distributed from terminals and depots across the UK. Delivery distance, local availability, route planning and vehicle access can all affect the price offered in different areas.
Deliveries to sites with restricted access may require a smaller tanker, while remote locations can involve longer journeys. Larger or coordinated deliveries may be more economical where several customers in the same area require fuel.
Compass Fuels will calculate your quote using your postcode, required volume and delivery requirements.
Who Can Use Red Diesel?
Red diesel can only be used in eligible vehicles, machines and applications. Entitlement depends on both the type of equipment and the purpose for which it is being used.
Eligible uses can include certain activities connected with:
- agriculture;
- horticulture;
- forestry;
- aquatic farming;
- rail transport;
- eligible marine use;
- non-commercial heating;
- certain other specifically permitted machines and activities.
Red diesel entitlement was restricted in April 2022. Most construction activities and general commercial uses are no longer eligible simply because machinery is operating off-road.
Customers are responsible for ensuring that red diesel is being purchased and used lawfully. Read the government’s full guidance before ordering:

This is better than trying to reproduce every rule on the Compass website because eligibility can depend on the precise machine and activity.
